Dayuma, the first indigenous convert from the Auca/Huaorani tribe, passed away on March 1st. She is a key figure in Elisabeth Elliot's best-selling book Through Gates of Splendor. Dayuma helped the five missionary men (Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Peter Fleming, Roger Youderian, and Ed McCully) begin to speak her tribal language. After the five men were martyred, she would open the way for Rachel Saint (Nate's sister) and Elisabeth Elliot (Jim's wife) to make contact with and begin sharing the gospel with the Auca/Huaorani people.
