Description

Spike Milligan said of his friend, Peter Sellars 'To know him was like going to a desert island, he's that lonely...
Pol Pot started his journey to terror in Cambodia by learning from philosopher Jean Paul Sartre that people have no intrinsic value. Madonna's conclusion on the one thing missing in her life is 'I am a tormented person, I want to be happy'.
Paul Getty the richest man on earth, was asked 'Is there anything you don't have?' He replied 'you can always want a little more'.

Melvin Tinker shows what is missing in our contemporary mindset. He says -
'Let me ask: do you want to know why deep down you feel you are important when everything around you says you are not? Do you want to solve the paradox that the more you have the more you want and the less satisfied you seem to be?'

The answer? Queen Elizabeth, on her coronation, was handed a Bible and told 'here is wisdom.'

If God is the creator of the universe we should expect that his revealed truth should work for the best, be timeless in his relevance, and move us at the deepest level of our being. Millions of people, from different ages and cultures throughout the world, have found this to be the case. They have discovered that in reading the Bible a miracle occurs - God speaks...

Melvin Tinker demonstrates the sheer wisdom of select Bible passages as they address contemporary concerns - euthanasia, self-worth, marriage, family, etc. He shows us convincingly that living biblically in a complex world is not old-fashioned: it is wisdom.

Michael Green, Archbishop of Canterbury's advisor on Evangelism

What a joy to read a book so full of biblical wisdom! Melvin Tinker, a vicar from Hull, has done us a treat in expounding various Bible passages and applying them to contemporary issues such as abortion, euthanasia, education, self-worth, time, marriage and parenting. The book demonstrates that to live according to God's pattern as laid down in Scripture is the very best and truest way to live. Each chapter is based on one or more biblical passages, beginning with an explanation that God must be at the centre of all of life.

The exposition from Psalm 139 on the sanctity of life and moral absolutes is really full of good insights, and the chapter dealing with our self-image and self-worth is first-class material. However, I did wonder why there was a chapter on spiritual warfare, and a extract from a previous book by the author.

But as a working pastor (!) I found some splendid quotes, lots of great exposition, and really helpful application. This is well worth a read and study for small group leaders, pastors and all thinking Christians.
