Dr Alec Motyer (1924–2016) was a well–known Bible expositor and from an early age had a love for studying God’s Word. He was principal of Trinity College, Bristol and wrote many widely appreciated commentaries and other books.

In one of his 'preachers' notes he lamented the standard turgid (my word, not his) stuff detailing specialist (and uniformly unhelpful) theorising, and in another he urges the necessity to 'seek the logic' - i.e. discern the mind of the Holy Spirit. To me this is what commentating is 'all about'.
